Izmir: An Apartment Tour

Yesterday, a rug arrived at my apartment door. Paul brought it inside where I was giddy (giddy I tell you!) with excitement. This rug was the final piece of my plan for our apartment and once it was down, I could feel SETTLED.

I realize that we only have about ten more months here. But my brain demands that I act as if it is our forever home. “Make it cozy! Make it homey” I hear “but also, don’t spend too much money bc honestly, that would just be super wasteful…” (My brain obviously hates me 😆.)

The happy medium has been found however, and between the loaner furniture from the Air Force and the items that I either brought from Alaska or bought here (probably from IKEA…yay for a nearby IKEA!!) we feel comfortable. Like we’re at home.

Our apartment is only a few minutes walk from Paul’s building and it boasts a stunning view of Izmir. True, the AC is a bit weak (they don’t particularly trust AC here…) and they seem to have something against electricity since they only provide a scant number of outlets. We have to pull all the curtains down mid afternoon because we’d bake in the sun otherwise. There are suspicious vents in the bathrooms that provide us with both the good and bad scents from neighboring apartments. Also sounds 😬 But anyhoo…

Despite any oddities we discover during our time as expats, I'm confident that we will love our stay in Turkey. So far we have been on a tour of the seven churches of Revelations and traveled to Istanbul, Cappadocia and the gorgeous little town of Sigacik. We've visited the beach three times and Jack and I have gone scuba diving once. We've been to four farmer's markets and eaten so much amazing local produce. We've tried multiple Turkish foods and loved (most of) them. We walk ALOT but are thankful to have a car as well. I feel incredibly blessed by the opportunity to live here for one year. There are certainly times when life is tough (it is a PCS, after all) but they haven't been long lasting.

Anyway, school started last week so I've had to scale down our weekly adventuring. Boo. Still, there is so much more to do and see. I can't wait and hope that you come along for the ride.

Anyway, enjoy this little peek into our apartment! The boys took this opportunity to practice their filming and directing skills (but not for the whole time. I took over the filming at times because they were going so. very. slow.)

The only thing I wish was different was the distance between us and all our friends. I miss you all and wish that you were closer! Our door is always open!

PS: My children do not have custom made towels. They are merely different colors. Haha!
