Title: I Will Carry You
Author: Angie Smith
Recommended For: Parents who have experienced miscarriages, still births or early infant loss.
“I’ve been reading a book by Angie Smith called “I will Carry You.” She is the wife of the lead singer in the group Selah, and they lost a child given a poor diagnosis. She depicts the different emotions that overwhelmed her much better than I could. Her situation had many similarities to my own, and that is what challenged me to write our story, remember everything, no matter how hard.”
After reading this book I was reminded of God’s tender care in the middle of heartbreaking realities. It wasn’t a theological treatise, but it did remind me of deep theological truths. I held on to those truths throughout the time of grief following my miscarriage. I felt as though this one Christian woman was reaching out and comforting me, her sister in Christ, personally. I didn’t need to “be strong” as I read her words because like me, she wrote of hurt, pain, anger but how her relationship with God sustained her.
Like my sister-in-law, I wrote down my experience (as did Paul) and shared it with friends and family. That was a cathartic experience and one that I wouldn’t have pursued if I hadn’t read her account.
It is a powerful book, worth reading if you have faced the pain of infant loss.
