For the Christian, there is no truth as precious or as deeply refreshing as the gospel or “good news” of Jesus. As we rush around “getting things done” and “making a difference” it’s easy to miss the Spirit’s invitation to slow down and quench our thirsts. Yes the gospel is “the water of life without price” (Rev 22:17), but it is not cheap or ineffectual. It is the water from Jesus that “will become in [all who believe] a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). So Liz and I have been thinking how we might better meditate on the gospel ourselves and do so in an encouraging way, inviting others to slow down and enjoy it with us. What we came up with was Gospel Wednesdays (not to be overshadowed by Playlist Tuesdays!:-). But how should we think of the gospel? Where do we start when trying to capture its depth and power? Should we start with immeasurable love? Or perhaps transcendent holiness? Or maybe how an infinite God added a created-and-thus-finite human nature to his own divine nature (a.k.a. the hypostatic union)? If you thought this post was long, just wait ’til you see posts on that!
.
But of course, we don’t want to write posts that long and you don’t want to read them (or, at least you’d prefer that they be shorter and less…erudite ; -). So, what we’d like to do is prepare a short “devotional” type post on the gospel clarifying and amplifying it’s message. As C. S. Lewis expressed about heaven, so we would like to go “further up and further in” to arrive at deeper meanings for the gospel both in sublimity (think sprawling vistas) and practicality (the rubber meets the road). Though we’ve learned not to make promises (life is too unpredictable!), we’d like to write one post weekly and put them up on Wednesdays (because we all need that extra encouragement to get us over the hump of the week). So next week expect a post on: The Gospel As Story.
